Fire guts down Sudan’s largest oil refinery

On Wednesday, Sudan's largest fuel production facility, the Khartoum oil refinery in AlJaili, was engulfed in flames, triggering accusations between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over its cause.

The SAF attributed the destruction of the refinery, located 70 kilometers north of the capital, to the RSF militia. They claimed the attack targeted the control system, resulting in the fire. "At dawn today, for the fourth time, the SAF's warplanes bombarded Al-Jaili oil refinery, north of Bahri city in Khartoum State, completely destroying it," stated the SAF in a press release. In response, the RSF denied any involvement, shifting blame onto the SAF for the incident.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been entangled in a war between the SAF and RSF, predominantly in Khartoum and the Darfur region. The conflict has claimed around 9,000 lives, with over 6 million internally displaced and more than 1.3 million fleeing the country, according to the UN.

Recently, human rights groups have sounded the alarm about the massacre of the minority Masalit ethnic group in Darfur, intensifying concerns about atrocities amid the ongoing conflict.
